It has begun!!!
We have planted our first seeds, onions and leeks. Next week it will be tomatoes and peppers. I am so excited for this upcoming growing season!!! We are starting a CSA in our area and really excited for the community support we already have. Can't believe it is almost March!!!

About our CSA...
The Lazy Rabbit Homestead is looking for
shareholders for their future C.S.A. (community supported agriculture) for the
summer of 2016.
What is a CSA?
CSA
stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Local farmers offer individuals a
share of their harvest. Members pay at the beginning of the season and receive
weekly boxes of fresh produce for a set amount of time.
What will be in my box?
Standard
seasonal vegetables grown fresh in our local market farm. Recipes will also be offered to give you an
idea of how to use the vegetables.
What are the benefits of
participating in a CSA?
In addition to the wide variety of
fresh produce, you are also building a relationship with the farmer who grew
them. You have a closer connection to your food and a better knowledge of how
it was grown and harvested. You will be receiving freshly harvested vegetables
grown locally and ready for consumption.
Each share will feed a family of 4 for a week. Once commonplace, knowing where our
food comes from is now a novelty that can be hard to come by. If you
aren’t able to grow your own garden or simply can’t grow enough to meet your
family’s needs, joining a CSA (or shopping at farmers markets!) is the next best
thing. You can trust and know that it’s in good hands from seed to harvest.
This is an important one
for many. It has been found that at least twice the amount of money
stays within our local communities when we buy products
locally vs. not locally.
We can build strong local
communities buy supporting local farmers, artisans, and other
creators/producers that contribute to meeting our needs. If there is an
option to purchase something locally rather than a “Made in China” product,
please consider the local item, even if it may cost a bit more. The money
invested locally always comes back around and is an investment not just in the
company or person we’re purchasing from, but also in our own
families.
Meanwhile, the farmer is gaining the
benefit of loyal customers and a good cash flow early in the season.
What is the cost and how much do I get?
We will begin the CSA box distribution May
27th and go through October 8th, weather permitting. This will be 20 boxes of fresh vegetables for
your family. There will be a possibility
of extra boxes at the end of October if the weather remains nice and there is
extra produce. The cost will be $350 for
the entire season. That comes to $17.50
a box to feed a family of four fresh vegetables for the entire growing season!
We have purchased an older model camp trailer that we are going to revert into a chicken coop for 50 new chicks!! They will be arriving in February. Our calves are growing fine and enjoying the hay, YUM! We have become the happy owners of a rescue dog we named Tater. He is an awesome dog, he never eats the chickens or the rabbits. He would like to try and eat the cats!!! They of course are to fast for him. We will be farming about 4 acres this year and opening our road side stand which we have also been working on. The irrigation man was here today to give us the estimate on our drip irrigation system. We will be needing a greenhouse to start our plants in, so that will be the next purchase! It is going to be a good year! Enjoy the pictures!
